Kan's Awesome Music and Family Blog Entry (Feat. Kan's Grandmother)
๐๐Music and Family
-This song is one of the core songs of my childhood. She always played this with me and reassured me to be proud of myself and my culture. Like she said, this song is extremely empowering!-
Heyyyy! I was very excited about this specific blog because I love asking people questions about the most random things, so this was perfect. I went back and forth about who I wanted to choose for this assignment; I wasn't sure if I should have picked my mom or my grandmother. I was going to do my mom, but she fell asleep so I just asked my grandmother (she was tired so it was okay). I figured it would be cool to have the chance to do my grandmother, though! She is 68 years old (born in 1956) and has seen a LOT of musical developments and changes, so I was very excited to have the chance to ask these questions. Anyway, let's dive in! Here's how our interview went:
๐ฉ๐พ: Hi, how are you this evening?
๐ต๐พ: I'm good, how are you?
๐ฉ๐พ: I'm okay, thank you. I wanted to ask you some questions about music!
๐ต๐พ: Okay, that's fine.
๐ฉ๐พ: Okay, so the first question is: did you play any instruments, and if you did, what did you play and why?
๐ต๐พ: I actually didn't play any instruments.
๐ฉ๐พ: Why is that?
๐ต๐พ: The school I went to didn't have any instruments to play. You know how you played the little instruments like the recorder in elementary school? We didn't have that. It was because there was so much discrimination in my communities back then, and they didn't fund black schools like they did with white schools.
- This was very interesting to hear from her. I hadn't known this until then. It's truly disappointing that black children didn't have the same resources and opportunities as others. It's still a problem in many places today, as well.-
๐ฉ๐พ: It's truly a sad situation. But to continue on a lighter note, the next question I have for you is if you have ever been to any concerts?
๐ต๐พ: Yes!
๐ฉ๐พ: What was your favorite and why?
๐ต๐พ: My favorite concert was Stevie Wonder because of his music. I LOVE his music.
- The song I have inserted is her favorite song from Stevie Wonder, Superstition. She always played this song when I was growing up! Fun fact, I chose this song for my acapella group in high school, just for her!-
๐ฉ๐พ: Awesome! Speaking of loving music, my next question is who is your favorite artist and why?
๐ต๐พ: I would say Diana Ross!'
๐ฉ๐พ: Fantastic. What do you like about her music?
๐ต๐พ: I love that her music is non-violent, and teaches everyone to love and care for each other.
- Here, I have inserted her favorite Diana Ross song, I Will Survive.-
๐ฉ๐พ: That is so true. Okay! The next question is what is your favorite genre of music and why?
๐ต๐พ: I love R&B because of the soul put into the music, and that's what I grew up on.
- She doesn't have a specific R&B song that is her favorite, so I just inserted Be Without You, by Mary J. Blige. Top tier song!!-
๐ฉ๐พ: I love R&B too. The next question is what is a song that will never get old for you, and why?
๐ต๐พ: I would say James Brown's 'I'm black and I'm Proud'. I feel that that song was very empowering to the black community during times of discrimination and racism. It taught us to not be ashamed of who we are and what we look like.
๐ฉ๐พ: You did play that song a lot when I was growing up! I love it too. The last question I have for you is do you support my choice to do music as my career?
๐ต๐พ: Absolutely. If it is something that you like to do, you should do it.
๐ฉ๐พ: That means a lot. Thank you so much for your time!

That's all! I really hope that this was entertaining and opened everyone up to new music and a new perspective. This was a very fun assignment to do. Enjoy!! ๐๐
I thought it was interesting hearing about your grandmother's perspective on music as an older black woman. It's really unfortunate that she wasn't able to start playing an instrument in school because of discrimination, and I think it's really amazing that she still found music that made her feel connected despite the obstacles she faced. Also I really like the way you formatted your post, it was very easy to read!
ReplyDeleteKanaria I absolutely LOVE your grandma's taste in music. Theres not a song on this entire page that I don't like. It's really sad to hear about her not having any musical education in her schooling. I'm really glad she was able to find her love for music outside of that.
